TRIPS – Targeting Resources in Primary Schools

TRIPS study

The Australian Primary Principals Association (APPA) has commissioned new research into primary resourcing, the Targeting Resources in Primary Schools (TRIPS) study. The study will build on previous research sponsored by APPA and, for the first year, has been funded by the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR).

The TRIPS study is led by Prof Max Angus and Harriet Olney from Edith Cowan University and Dr John Ainley from the Australian Council of Educational Research.

The purpose of the TRIPS study is to investigate how schools can target resources to reduce the number of students at or below minimum standards in literacy and numeracy. Principals and teachers from thirty schools from the government and non-government sectors in three states will participate in the first year.

In August 2009 and March 2010, class teachers will be asked to make judgements about the resource needs of students struggling to reach nationally acceptable standards in literacy or numeracy or both by completing the Class Survey Form. Principals will be asked to report on the community context, the resources available in the school and the strategies in place by completing the School Survey Form. School systems will also be asked to provide information about the resources they have disbursed to schools.

Protocols to protect both student and teacher privacy have been put in place.
